Reduce and manage waste

Winter Waste

Waste is separated into the following streams

  • Garbage – collected from the rooms, bathroom, black bin in dining room and kitchen bin.
  • Bottles, Cans and Plastics-collected from bin in kitchen
  • Paper and Cardboard –collected from bin in kitchen
  • Cooking Oil-collected in the kitchen
  • Organic Food Waste- collected in white organic food waste bins in kitchen. (winter only is transported to Sawpit Creek and composted.)

The NPWS Perisher Team operates a winter waste collection service for Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes premises. Winter waste collection will operate from the first Wednesday before the start of the ski season to the first Wednesday after the end of the ski season. Each waste stream will be collected every second day. The garbage is picked up from the cupboard next to the gas cylinder.

Summer Waste

A waste transfer location will operate at the entrance to the WTS where staff and guests can dispose of waste (general household) and recyclables. Solid waste such as white goods, old ski equipment and building waste will not be accepted.

Reduce and manage waste – single-use plastics

Plastic Straws

The implementation of a no plastic straw policy represents a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of single-use plastics. By encouraging alternatives such as paper or reusable straws, this policy not only mitigates the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine life and ecosystems but also raises awareness about the need for sustainable choices. It underscores the collective responsibility we share in preserving our planet and serves as a reminder that small, everyday changes can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Single Use Plastic Cups

The adoption of a no single-use plastic cup policy is a commendable initiative in the ongoing battle against plastic pollution. By promoting the use of eco-friendly, reusable, or compostable alternatives, this policy significantly reduces the environmental strain caused by disposable plastic cups. It underscores the importance of transitioning to more sustainable consumption patterns, highlighting the urgency of addressing our plastic waste crisis. This policy not only signifies a commitment to protecting our planet’s delicate ecosystems and wildlife but also fosters a cultural shift towards responsible and conscious choices, essential for a cleaner and healthier environment.

Single Use Plastic Water Bottles

The implementation of a no single-use plastic water bottles policy is a vital stride towards minimising the pervasive issue of plastic pollution. This policy encourages the use of refillable containers, tap water, and alternative sustainable options, thereby significantly reducing the staggering volume of plastic waste that plagues our environment. It underscores our responsibility in preserving natural resources, reducing our carbon footprint, and safeguarding marine and terrestrial ecosystems from plastic contamination. Beyond the tangible environmental benefits, this policy sends a clear message about the importance of conscious and sustainable consumption, a crucial step toward a greener and more sustainable future for us and generations to come.

Plastic cutlery bowls or plates

The adoption of a no plastic cutlery, bowls, or plates policy signifies a resolute commitment to mitigating the far-reaching impact of plastic waste. By encouraging the use of biodegradable, reusable, or eco-friendly alternatives, this policy directly addresses the root of our disposable plastic problem, reducing environmental harm and waste generation. It underscores the urgency of embracing sustainable practices in our daily lives and underscores the link between individual choices and environmental preservation. Beyond its ecological benefits, this policy serves as a catalyst for a broader shift in consumer behaviour, encouraging a more mindful and eco-conscious approach to our consumption patterns, thereby fostering a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Reduce and manage water use

Reuse towels

Our towel reuse policy is designed with both guest comfort and environmental responsibility in mind. When guests arrive, they will be provided with a fresh towel for their use during their stay. To minimise our environmental impact, we kindly request that guests consider reusing their towels during their stay. If guests find it necessary to have their towels cleaned, they will find a washing machine and dryer available in the ski room, which is provided for their convenience. By reusing towels and utilising our on-site laundry facilities, guests can actively contribute to our eco-friendly practices and help reduce water and energy consumption while enjoying a comfortable and sustainable stay with us. We appreciate our guests’ cooperation in our commitment to environmental sustainability.

House Keeping

Our housekeeping policy prioritises sustainability and guest comfort. In an effort to reduce our environmental impact, we have implemented a “No Daily Room Service” policy. Guests’ rooms will not be serviced daily, unless specifically requested. Instead, we will provide a thorough cleaning and restocking of amenities every three days or as per the guest’s preference. This approach helps conserve water, energy, and reduces the use of cleaning chemicals, contributing to a more eco-friendly stay. Should guests require any additional toiletries, or any specific cleaning services during their stay, our housekeeping team is available upon request. We appreciate our guests’ understanding and support in our shared commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.

Water efficient toilets

Our water-efficient toilet policy is centred on environmental responsibility and water conservation. To ensure a sustainable approach, all toilets in guest rooms, public areas, and staff areas are equipped with a dual flush system, with a maximum flush volume of 3/6 liters (0.79/1.59 US gallons) per flush. This innovation significantly reduces water consumption without compromising functionality or cleanliness. We encourage all guests and staff to use this dual flush system to minimise our water footprint and support our commitment to eco-friendly practices. By implementing these water-efficient toilets throughout our premises, we aim to contribute to the preservation of this precious resource, fostering a more sustainable and responsible environment for all.

Water efficient showers

Our water-efficient shower policy emphasises our dedication to environmental sustainability and water conservation. In adherence to this commitment, all guest rooms are equipped with water-efficient showers that have a flow rate not exceeding 9 liters (2.38 US gallons) per minute. These showers are designed to deliver an enjoyable and refreshing experience while minimising water consumption. We encourage our guests to take advantage of these water-efficient features, helping to reduce the overall environmental impact of our operations. By choosing these showers, we collectively contribute to a more responsible use of this valuable resource and promote a greener, more sustainable future for our planet.

Reduce energy and greenhouse gases

Energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs

Our energy-efficient LED bulb policy underscores our strong commitment to sustainability and reducing our energy footprint. We are proud to announce that 100% of our lighting fixtures are equipped with energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs. These  bulbs are not only more environmentally friendly but also deliver superior energy savings and longevity, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective operation. By embracing this technology, we aim to reduce energy consumption, minimise greenhouse gas emissions, and offer a well-lit, comfortable environment for our guests and staff. We appreciate our guests’ and employees’ support in our journey towards a greener and more energy-efficient future.

Double glazed windows

Our commitment to energy efficiency and guest comfort is reflected in our “All Windows Are Double-Glazed” policy. In every room and public space, we have installed double-glazed windows to enhance insulation, reduce heat transfer, and minimize outdoor noise intrusion. This not only ensures a more pleasant and peaceful environment for our guests but also significantly contributes to energy conservation by reducing the need for excessive heating and cooling. We believe that this investment in sustainability and guest satisfaction aligns with our values, and we appreciate our guests’ understanding and support in our shared mission to reduce our carbon footprint and provide a more comfortable and eco-friendly experience.

Food waste policy

Our food waste policy embodies our unwavering commitment to sustainability, responsible resource management, and community well-being. We are dedicated to minimising food waste at every stage of our operations. Our chefs and kitchen staff adhere to efficient meal planning, portion control, and inventory management to reduce excess food production. Any edible food surplus is donated to local charities and organisations, ensuring that it reaches those in need. Additionally, food scraps are composted to divert organic waste from landfills, contributing to soil enrichment. We encourage our guests to participate in our food waste reduction efforts by offering smaller portion options and educating them on the importance of mindful consumption. By implementing these strategies, we strive to significantly reduce food waste, lower our environmental impact, and support our local community. Together, we can create a more sustainable and responsible food ecosystem.

Vegetarian options on the menu

Our “Offer Vegetarian Options on the Menu” policy is rooted in our commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and the well-being of our guests. We proudly offer a diverse range of delicious vegetarian dishes on our menu, ensuring that all dietary preferences and choices are catered to. This policy not only promotes healthier eating options but also significantly reduces our environmental footprint by decreasing the carbon emissions associated with meat production. We believe in providing an inclusive dining experience that reflects the diverse needs and preferences of our guests, while also contributing to a more sustainable and eco-conscious culinary culture. Your satisfaction and the health of our planet are at the heart of our efforts, and we look forward to welcoming you to enjoy our delectable vegetarian offerings.  Please let us know on ahead (one week in advance) your preference for vegetarian food exclusively).

At our establishment, we uphold a steadfast commitment to the ethical treatment of wildlife. We have a strict “No Display, Interaction, Harvest, Consumption, or Sale of Wild Animals” policy, ensuring that non-domesticated creatures are not kept for exhibition or exploited in any manner. We believe in respecting the intrinsic value of all living beings and their natural habitats, safeguarding them from harm and exploitation. By adhering to this policy, we strive to create a harmonious and responsible environment that promotes wildlife conservation, ethical tourism, and the preservation of our planet’s precious biodiversity.
